Cross-Sectional CT and MR Anatomy Atlas of Red Deer

Great interest has been aroused in the field of animal science, among researchers and all those connected with applied techniques, in non-invasive, in vivo methods for the study and monitoring of live animals. Ultrasound imaging was the first imaging technology to gain wide acceptance in animal research and practice. X-ray computed tomography (CT) and magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) are the techniques which at present enable the closest and most detailed view of the live animal to be obtained. Both CT and MRI have opened new dimensions in human and veterinary diagno-sis in the past two decades. In animal science both methods are well suited to the depiction of organs and tissues which are major subjects in selection, and are the primary targets (i.e., meat and fat) of animal production. Development of organs and tissues during growth may be monitored and evaluated with great precision in the same animal, undesirable anatomical and physiological deviations can be depicted and correct selection decisions can be taken based on qualitative and quantitative evaluation of the images taken. Correct anatomical identification of organs and tissues in the CT and MRI images necessitates experience and training. This CT and MRI atlas of the red deer (Cervus elaphus) is intended to serve this purpose.
