The basic plan of each book in this series is : (a) to give the student a selection of unsimplified passages relating to his subject of study, taken from established textbooks, journals and so on ; (b) to provide copious notes dealing with the main grammatical constructions and much of the vocabulary; (c) to provide exercises to test comprehension of the passages and to give practice in the use of commonly occurring grammatical patterns and vocabulary. Although the books can be used for private study, they should, wherever possible, be studied with the help of a teacher. The problems faced by the English teacher who may have little or no knowledge of the subject-matter are therefore taken fully into account. Where necessary, the pronunciation of technical terms is given, as are the answers to the exercises. Many of the notes are also intended to help the teacher.
